What’s the Difference Between an LPN and a PCT?

Are you considering a career in healthcare? If so, you’re probably curious about some of the differences that exist between various positions. At AMG Medical Institute, we offer a variety of nursing programs in New Jersey to help you become whichever kind of healthcare professional you aspire to be. In today’s blog, we’ll be going over the difference between a licensed practical nurse (LPN) and a patient care technician (PCT), so you can figure out which path is right for you!

Responsibilities of an LPN

In general, LPNs have a higher degree of responsibility for patient care than PCTs. They provide more complex care, such as administering medications, starting IVs, and caring for patients with chronic health conditions. LPNs also play a vital role in patient education, providing information about disease prevention and health maintenance. LPNs typically act as supervisors over PCTs.

Duties of a PCT

In contrast to LPNs, PCTs are responsible for providing basic patient care, including taking vital signs, bathing and dressing patients, and providing assistance with activities of daily living. They also collect data about patients’ health status and communicate this information to the RN or physician.

LPN vs. PCT: Which Is Right for You?

Determining which role is the best fit for you is dependent on a number of factors, such as your experience level, your aspirations, and the medical facility you’re working at.
