Become a Diagnostic Medical Sonographer

Prospective students in this program will receive hands-on training in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (DMS), learning to safely and effectively operate ultrasound equipment to produce diagnostic images for patient evaluation and medical diagnosis. Students will develop scanning skills in Abdominal, Obstetrical & Gynecological (OB/GYN), Pediatric, Musculoskeletal (MSK), and Vascular Sonography, while gaining knowledge of anatomy, pathology, patient care, image acquisition, and professional clinical practices. This training prepares graduates for entry-level employment as diagnostic medical sonographers in a variety of healthcare settings.

Career Outlook

Diagnostic Medical Sonography is one of the fastest-growing professions in healthcare. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), employment of diagnostic medical sonographers is projected to grow 13% from 2024 to 2034, much faster than the average for all occupations. The increasing demand is driven by an aging population, advances in ultrasound technology, and the growing preference for noninvasive diagnostic imaging procedures.

The BLS reports that there were approximately 90,000 diagnostic medical sonographers employed nationwide in 2024, with an estimated 5,800 job openings each year over the next decade due to both workforce growth and retirements.

According to the most recent BLS wage data, the median annual salary for diagnostic medical sonographers was $89,340 in 2024, with earnings varying based on education, certifications, specialty, geographic location, and experience. Many experienced sonographers and those in specialized fields earn well over $100,000 annually.
