BECOME A SKILLED OPERATING ROOM TECHNICIAN

The Surgical Technologist program will prepare students to become skilled operating room technicians. Surgical technologists are essential members of the surgical team who work closely with surgeons, anesthesiologists, registered nurses, and other surgical personnel. Primary responsibilities for surgical technologists include organizing and preparing the operating room for procedures, maintaining a sterile environment, and distributing surgical instruments.

Comprehensive Training

This program is designed to prepare Surgical Technologists who practice under medical supervision to facilitate the safe and effective conduct of invasive surgical procedures. The individual works as a member of the surgical team under the supervision of the circulating nurse and surgeon to ensure that the operating room environment is safe, that equipment functions properly, and that the operative procedure is conducted under conditions that maximize patient safety. Surgical technologists possess expertise in the theory and application of sterile and aseptic technique and combine knowledge of human anatomy, surgical procedures, and implementation tools and technologies to facilitate a physician’s performance of invasive therapeutic and diagnostic procedures. Graduates of Surgical Technology programs are prepared to work in various settings, including inpatient hospital operating rooms, outpatient surgery centers, emergency rooms, and central supply. Students are eligible and will take the Surgical Technologist's Certification Exam before graduation.

About Our Surgical Technologist Program

The Surgical Technology program offers a Certificate. The program consists of 1350 hours, and the duration is 12 months. A surgical conscience is a foundation upon which the growth and development of a surgical technologist are built. The principles of sterile technique must be carefully maintained. Breaks in procedure may bring to the wound bacteria, which the body's defense system cannot destroy. A lack of knowledge of the principles of aseptic technique and their application does not justify a break in the sterile technique. Even mild infections delay recovery and cost the patient time lost and money spent. A mild infection is potentially a severe one. Moreover, antibiotics have not supplanted sterile technique, which is to be observed for all patients. Principles must be followed meticulously. None of the personnel should ever be reluctant to admit a possible break in technique, even if there is any doubt about it. We are responsible for the patient, whose trust and fate are in our hands.

Surgical technologist graduates will be eligible for the Tech in Surgery - Certified examination offered by the National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT).

Career Outlook

Surgical Technologists are crucial members of the surgical team. They are employed in hospital operating rooms, delivery rooms, cast rooms, ambulatory care units, and central supply departments. They are
utilized in clinics, ophthalmologists, physicians, and dentists’ offices. With a broad educational background and specialized focus, Surgical Technologists function well in diverse areas such as medical sales, product development and research, laser technology, and biomedical engineering. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics BLS), surgical technologists earned an average yearly salary of $45,940 to $63,410 as of 2015.
